Musiliu Smith, the chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), announced his resignation on Wednesday.

There are allegations that disputes inside the commission led to the former Inspector General of Police’s forced resignation as PSC Chairman.

According to sources who spoke with Newsmen, retired Justice Clara Ogunbiyi, who represents the judiciary at the commission, was given control of Smith on Wednesday by the PSC Board.

The board members discussed changing the PSC Act, which currently stipulates that a retired Inspector-General of Police be nominated to chair the commission, according to the sources.

The insider claimed that if a former IGP is named as the committee’s chairman, the commission won’t be unbiased or independent.

The source said, “Immediately after the meeting started, one of the commissioners said that the defining characteristic and mission of the commission is that it is a civilian oversight body, external to the Police.

“This requires the PSC to be independent and impartial. It cannot be either of these if it is headed by a retired former Inspector-General of Police.”

The move, according to the source, is no longer impartial and independent due to the appointment of an ex-IGP as Chairman, which is why Smith is being asked to go.

According to the source, Smith agreed to the proposal made by another commissioner that he resign.

President Buhari selected Smith as the commission’s chairman in May 2018.

He took over for Mike Okiro, a former police inspector general.
