Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC chairman, has described how certain hackers, including some in Asia, attempted to hack into the INEC Results Viewing iRev Portal during the most recent elections in Ekiti and Osun.

The INEC chairman claimed that the hackers attempted to alter the results at the polling unit level but were unsuccessful while speaking at a seminar in Abuja.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, Senator Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) defeated incumbent Governor of Osun State Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Osun Governor election.

However, Professor Yakubu gave the assurance that the commission had taken action to fortify its digital assets in order to guarantee the impenetrable security of all its web-based resources.

Additionally, he denied allegations that one of the political parties in the Osun election managed to hack the portal and planned to present the alleged to the tribunal.

He said that many cyberattacks, some coming from as far away as Asia, were recorded by INEC engineers during the governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun. I’m relieved to see that they all fell short.

“However, while we are confident in the security solutions that we have deployed for IReV and all our web presence, we must remain vigilant and continue to strengthen our defences.

“We have tasked our engineers to do everything possible to fully protect the IReV and all our web resources.”

Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Rotimi Oyekanmi confirmed the attempts to assault the commission’s webpage and assured Newsmen that the threats were effectively countered.

He promised that the engineers at INEC will keep foreseeing such threats and persistently developing security precautions for its dog talk assets.

“All online resources, like websites or portals, are prone to attacks or hacking. It is a common phenomenon. What the INEC Chairman talked about was an attempt by some rouges to compromise the integrity of our INEC Result Viewing Portal. But the Commission successfully dealt with the threats,” said Oyekanmi.
