Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, and Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, have broken off their reconciliation talks.

After the party named the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, as the Chairman of the PDP Presidential Management Committee, the effort by the party and the former Vice President to win Wike’s support in 2023 suffered.

In recent months, Governor Wike’s team have criticized the party for failing to include the South when choosing its leader.

Due to the problem, it was demanded that Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman, step down so that a Southerner might succeed him.

But once the party leadership chose Tambuwal, a northerner, to lead the presidential management committee, the turmoil within the party grew deeper.

In order to protect their identity, the person who spoke with The Nation claimed that Governor Wike’s camp is preparing for their next move before the general elections of 2023.

According to various reports, Governor Wike’s team is not happy for the following reasons:

1. Atiku publicly called for the ouster of Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP’s national chairman, without giving Wike’s side any advance warning.

2. After his three-man team met with the governor’s representatives in Port Harcourt, Atiku refused to go back to Wike’s camp to explain his stance.

3. The South is not sufficiently represented in PDP matters.

4. The purported cosmetic selection of Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President, to lead the PDP Board of Trustees.

5. The selection of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as the Director-General of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council offended Wike’s camp.

Atiku has not given up trying to win over Wike before the election, according to a second source who talked with the newsmen.
