As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prepares to announce the final list of presidential and National Assembly candidates, tension is in the air.

A list of presidential candidates, their vice presidents, and national assembly candidates was published by INEC in June.

In the camp of certain politicians, there is nervousness as the electoral authority prepares to disclose the final list.

Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President, is unsure whether his name will appear on the list because Bashir Machina is adamant about continuing to be the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Yobe North senatorial seat.

This is true even though the National Working Committee (NWC) chose to support Lawan instead of Machina, who is thought to have won the INEC primary.

Godswill Akpabio, the former minister of Niger Delta affairs, is competing in Akwa Ibom North-West against Udom Udo Ekpoudom, who won the May 27, 2022 primary.

Despite the fact that the Federal High Court recognized Akpabio as the legitimate candidate, the matter does not appear to have been resolved because Ekpoudom refused to accept the court’s decision.

The court had mandated that Akpabio’s name be accepted and published by INEC as the APC’s 2023 senatorial candidate for the Akwa Ibom North/West senatorial district.

Candidates and political parties would be anticipating the commission’s today’s announcement of the final list.
