Justice Olukayode Ariwoola’s nomination as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria has been approved by the Senate (CJN).

The progression came as a result of his Wednesday Senate chambers Committee of the Whole screening.

Justice Ariwoola answered questions from Senators throughout the screening.

Senator Ibrahim Gobir, the Senate leader, made the motion to screen at the 11:35 a.m. session.

The screening procedure had been requested to be moved up from where it was posted on the order paper by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

Gobir made a motion for the Senate to establish the Committee of the Whole to undertake the screening and suspend any applicable laws to allow the acting CJN Ariwoola and his entourage into the chamber.

The motions were adopted by the Senate.

The acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Ariwoola, all of the Justices of the Supreme Court, the Presidents of the Federal High Court and the National Industrial Court, as well as the Secretary of the National Judicial Council, then entered the chambers and took their seats.
