The military has been urged to “examine the topography of the South East region, develop new approaches, and do more in the protection of the residents of the area,” according to Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodimma.

When Major Gen. Umar T. Musa, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Enugu, paid him a courtesy visit at the New Executive Council Chambers Government House, Owerri, on Thursday, Uzodinma made the call.

The Governor noted that insecurity has challenged the government so much and it will “continue to encourage the military and other arms of the Armed Forces to help the government bring peace and ensure security to the South East.”

Governor Uzodimma said that “all efforts being made to stamp them out criminality has been futile as they are adamant in their activities of destroying government property, killing innocent citizens, burning down police stations and generally retarding development in the zone.”

He took advantage of the chance to praise Obinze Bridg, the 34 Artillery Brigade’s commanding officer.
He claimed that Gen. S. Sulaiman has worked hard to combat banditry and criminality alongside his men, and that some military personnel have even paid the ultimate sacrifice while performing their duties.

Additionally, he exhorted the GOC and his men to ask for any information that might aid them in achieving their goals of establishing safety and peace in the region.

Earlier, Maj. Gen. Musa informed the governor that they are in Imo “to advise the Governor that I have fully accepted duties as the new GOC in the South East” and to pay a courtesy call as custom dictates.”

The GOC said so far the officers and soldiers “have tried to curtail the activities of the irredentist to ensure they are no more a threat to the law abiding citizens of the zone who are loyal to the rules, regulations and constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He underlined that the majority of bandits, armed robbers, and kidnappers are just plain criminals who specialize in crime.

He reassured them that it is their duty to see that the offenders are apprehended so that the populace can go about their daily lives as usual.

He then promised: “I have come to serve,” noting that the troops under his watch have been counselled to remain apolitical and to conduct themselves within their professional calling.”
