The Federal Government of Nigeria has urged Nigerians to ignore a rumored list of candidates for national awards that is making the rounds on social media.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, a list of 436 other candidates for the 2022 National Honours Award, including Abba Kyari, the late chief of staff for President Muhammadu Buhari, has already appeared online.

The investiture is scheduled to take place in the State House in Abuja on October 11, 2022, as previously reported.

Femi Adesina, the White House press secretary, and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director general of the World Trade Organization (WTO), are among those Buhari will honor.

However, a statement issued on Monday by Julie Jacobs, the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs’ Director of Press, indicated that the official list for the aforementioned prize has not yet been made public.

Jacobs gave his word that the major list will be released in a timely and acceptable manner. The official from the administration urged the general populace to ignore the viral list since it is an effort by overeager reporters to break fake news even when it is true.

The statement read, “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs has been drawn to a purported list of nominees for National Honours being circulated by some online media organisations.

“While it is true that President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, will be conferring National Honours on deserving Nigerians and friends of Nigeria on 11th October, 2022, the authentic list of nominees is yet to be released to the public. The Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs will publish the list at the appropriate time and medium.

“Members of the public are hereby enjoined to discountenance the list in circulation as it is an attempt by overzealous reporters whose aim is to break news even when such news is fake.”
