2023 Elections: INEC Releases Final List Of Governorship Candidates

The final list of candidates for governorships and state houses of assembly in the general elections of 2023 has been made public by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the national elections for governor and state houses of assembly will take place on March 11, 2023.

The names of candidates for governorship and the house of assembly who are currently involved in legal proceedings in their respective states were noticeably absent from the list made public by INEC on Tuesday.

The list was displayed in the regional offices of each state’s election body.

Lagos State

15 people are running for governor in Lagos state, according to the electoral agency.

Despite the controversy surrounding his bid, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour was listed as the Labour Party’s (LP) governorship candidate in the list released at the INEC office in Lagos.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the current governor, was nominated as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for governor, while Adediran Azeez Olajide was listed as the Peoples Democratic Party candidate (PDP).

Additionally, there are Bamidele Ishola, Dickson Hakeem Olaogun (Accord Party), Balogun Tope Abdulrazaq (AA), Olayiwola Hakeem Olajide (AAC), Doherty Olufunsho Adeshina (ADC), and Olayiwola Hakeem Olajide (AAC) (ADP).

Others are Jim-Kamal Olanrewaju Olalekan (NNPP), Kupoliyi Funmilayo (APM), Adeyemi Abiola Roseline (APP), Oluwo Olawale Wasiu (BP), Braithwaite Akinwumi Ishola (NRM), Uthman Olakunle Taofeek (SDP), Ajayi Wasiu Adebayo (YPP), and Adenipebi Mode Ad (ZLP).

Kano State

Both Sadiq Aminu Wali of the PDP and Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate Sha’aban Sharada made the cut.

While Bashir I. Bashir, the Labour Party’s (LP) candidate, was not included in the final list, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, who represented the APC, was.

The name of Mohammed Raji Abdullahi, the former LP candidate, was kept on the list.

For the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Ahmed Isa Muhammad is now the party’s governorship candidate and the youngest candidate in Kano, while Yakubu Uba Muhammad, who was formerly the party’s governorship candidate, is now the party’s deputy governorship candidate.

Ogun State

 

As INEC revealed the names of 13 political parties and their candidates on the official list, neither the PDP nor the LP have candidates running for governor in Ogun State.

PDP was listed at number 21, however neither the name of the governorship candidate nor his running mate was present. The commission explained the removal from the final list as being due to a “court order.”

In the case of the LP, neither the party nor its candidate were listed by INEC.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Biyi Otegbeye, the incumbent governor and APC candidate Dapo Abiodun, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate Oguntoyinbo Femi Ajadi were also listed (NNPP).

The list also included Ogunronmbi Oludayo (NRM), Adeyemi Olufemi (Action Alliance), Harrison Adeyemi (AAC), Sokunbi Olanrewaju (ADP), Jolaoluwa Emmanuel (APM), Falana Omoshile (APP), Omosanya Monsuru of Accord, Bamgbose Olufemi (PRP), and Ojesina Anthony (SDP).

Rivers State

There are 16 candidates running for governor of Rivers State according to the final list posted and pasted at the INEC office in Port Harcourt.

Similanayi Fubara of the PDP, Pastor Tonye Cole of the APC, Senator Magnus Abe of the SDP, Dumo Lulu-Briggs of the Accord Party, and Dr. Dawari George of the African Alliance, AA are prominent names among those cleared.

The candidates from the following political parties have been approved to run for governor: ZLP, ADC, AAC, APGA, APP, BP, NNPP, NRM, YPP, and ZLP.

Kwara State

The lone female contender on the official INEC governorship list for Kwara is Mrs. Jaiyeola Motunrayo Deborah, 41, of APM.

While Prof. Abdulraheem Shuaib Oba of the NNPP, who is running for governor, is the oldest, the Labour Party’s Abubakar Basambo Kabir, 35, will be the youngest.

Ebonyi State

In Ebonyi, 13 candidates for governor, along with their running mates, were yesterday announced by INEC to contest in the state’s upcoming elections. Mr. Nwonomara Nyiba of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC), who has stated he is 35 years old, is the youngest of them all. The 37-year-old Chinyere Judith followed him.

Hon. Ogbonnaya Nwifuru, speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, was announced as the APC’s candidate for governor of Ebonyi State, and Chief Ifeanyichukwuma Odii was listed as the PDP’s candidate.

Other guber candidates are Opoke Sunday for YPP, Usulor Anthony for NRM and Chukwuma Nwandugo for AA and others.

Akwa Ibom

APC does not have a candidate in Akwa Ibom, presumably because of current litigation. However, there were 17 additional candidates for governorship, including Pastor Umo Eno of the PDP, Senator Bassey Albert of the YPP, and John AkpanUdoedehe of the NNPP.

11 registered political parties in Jigawa state received approval from INEC to field governorship candidates in the 2023 election.

2023 Elections Will Be Different From 2019 Elections – INEC To Nigerians

Malam Umar Namadi, the deputy governor and candidate for governor of the APC, is on the list, along with Alhaji Mustapha Sule Lamido of the PDP and Alhaji Ibrahim Aminu Ringim of the NNPP.

Oyo State

Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State and a candidate from each of 15 other parties, will square off for the top position in the state.

Adebayo Adelabu of the Accord, Teslim Folarin of the APC, Ajekiigbe Lateef of the AA, Akinwale Tawfiq of the Labour Party (LP), and Popoola Olukayode of the NNPP are the candidates who will run against the governor.

Others include Yinusa Kazeem, Adeniran Adeyemi, Adeshina Adewale, Okedara Mojeed (AAC), Ajadi Bamidele (ADC), Yusuf Akim (ADP), and Adeshina Adewale (APGA) (AAP).

The list is completed by Euba Aduragbemi of the Young Progressive Party, Adegboyega Raymond of the National Rescue Movement, Micheal Lana of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Okunade Tunde of the Boot Party.

Examining the list reveals that neither the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) nor the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) have any candidates for the Oyo State governorship.
