Jacob Zuma, the former president of South Africa, was freed from prison on Friday after serving his whole sentence.

Correctional services claim that Zuma was only detained for a portion of his sentence before being released.

Recall that in July 2021, the former president was sentenced to a year and three months in prison for contempt of court.

Zuma was released on medical parole two months after refusing to appear before a graft inquiry.

In a message made public on Friday, the former president stated, “It is a day of mixed emotions.”

Having spoken out against what he called a “unjust and inhumane incarceration,” he was appreciative of his supporters’ actions.

Zuma further stated, “I am relieved to be free again to walk around and do whatever I want to do without restrictions.”

He contrasted his release to the day he left Cape Town’s infamous Robben Island prison in 1973, when he had been imprisoned with Nelson Mandela as a political prisoner during the apartheid era.

After being admitted to the hospital for an undisclosed condition, Zuma was given parole.
