LATEST: Buhari Meets State Governors Over Floods Across States

Friday’s meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and state governors was to discuss the distressing flood disasters now impacting some areas.

After greeting the governors at the State House today, Buhari encouraged them to meet with the minister of water resources, Suleiman Adamu, right away to discuss practical solutions to the floods wreaking havoc across the nation.

The governors were also tasked by the leader of Nigeria with coming to an agreement on a course of action and elevating it to the federal government.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the conference was attended by Kayode Fayemi, the departing chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and governor of Ekiti.

The incoming Interim Chairman, Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, and Interim Deputy Chairman, Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi, were present during the discussion as well.

The governors expressed their sadness over the situation brought on by the floods in separate speeches, emphasizing that it had resulted in numerous fatalities.

The governors claim that the calamity has caused the loss of homes and washed-away farmlands in Kogi, Yobe, Jigawa, and other states, and they have asked the federal government for special financing.

In his statement, Fayemi, who will leave office at the end of the month, thanked President Buhari for helping him lead the state of Ekiti as well as his fellow officials.

He said: “You always accorded us due regard. You accommodated us, and listened to our pleas.

“You were always there for us when we had challenges, individually, or collectively. We owe you a debt of gratitude.”

Governor Tambuwal, however, noted that the flooding creates a frightening scenario for food security.

“We need to plan ahead for dry season farming”, said the Sokoto State Governor.

In his remarks, Bagudu called for adequate credit for the agricultural sector because of the peculiar challenges.
