Celestine Omheia’s de-recognition as governor of Rivers State was deemed unlawful by Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate.

This was stated by Daniel Bwala, a spokesperson for the Atiku Presidential Campaign Council, on Friday during an appearance on Arise News.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the Rivers Assembly decertified Omehia as a former governor on Thursday and demanded that he return all the privileges he earned as the state’s top citizen within seven days.

The former governor of the state, Omehia, was officially de-recognized on Friday when the state’s governor, Nyesom Wike, signed the bill into law. Omehia was de-recognized due to an ongoing Supreme Court decision that removed him from office.

In the interview, Bwala stated that derecognizing Omehia entailed the voiding of all official actions he took while serving as governor, including the signature of bills and the approval of some appointments.

However, Bwala argued that the state Assembly could not approve and reprobate at the same time, and he requested the legislators to also invalidate all of the official activities he had carried out while in office.

He said, “If it is possible for either a House of Assembly or National Assembly, to pass a law delisting the history of a public officer, it means official acts carried by him would be deemed as null and void. And you know during the period, Omehia must have signed bills into law; during the period, Omehia must have signed contract; during the period, Omehia may have appointed people. There are certain acts he would have performed.

“So, if you have the capacity to delist him, you cannot approbate and reprobate, you must also invalidate all the official acts that he has conducted.”

Bwala said the matter, if taken to court by Omehia, would be easily won against the Assembly.

He said: “It is not even a legally serious issue that you will say it is 50-50, and any law that is inconsistent with the provisions of the constitution, that law, to the extent of the inconsistency, is null and void. So if Omehia should go to the court, before the case is even mentioned, it is thrown out.”

This incident takes place while the PDP’s internal crises, particularly the one involving Atiku and Wike, worsens.

The Rivers governor is upset with Omehia’s alleged ardent support for Atiku.
