Buhari Reacts Over Death Of 76 Persons In Anambra Boat Accident

The death of 76 people in a boat accident in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State has been lamented by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Anaedoonline.ng stated that on Saturday, a boat carrying 85 passengers collapsed, resulting in 76 persons drowning and nine passengers being saved.

According to reports, the boat departed from Onukwu Bridge and was traveling toward Nkwo Market in the state’s Ogbakuba region when it sank.

Buhari gave the go-ahead for pertinent government departments to assist in the rescue effort for the remaining casualties in a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday.

In order to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future, the Nigerian leader also demanded that safety protocols be enforced on boats around the nation.

President Buhari, therefore, condoled the families of the victims of the boat accident, the people and the Government of Anambra state.

The statement reads: “President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday expressed sadness over the boat accident in Anambra state, in which dozens of people were killed.

“The boat reportedly carrying 85 persons capsized following rising floods in Ogbaru area of the State, with emergency bodies confirming a death toll of 76.

Anambra Market Leadership Tussle Takes Another Turn

“Following the tragedy, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority and the National Emergency Management Agency have embarked on rescue and recovery missions expeditiously.

“As more details are awaited, the President has directed all other rescue & relief agencies to rush to the site of the accident. He also directed the relevant government agencies to check the safety protocols on these Ferries to make sure such incidents are avoided in the future.

“President Buhari said he was saddened by the boat accident and directed that all possible efforts be made to account for all the passengers.

“The President prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for everyone’s safety, as well as the well-being of the family members of the victims of this tragic accident.”

Anaedoonline.ng reports that the incident is the fourth time a boat will capsize in the second quarter of 2022.
