Samuel Ortom, the governor of Benue State, has accused Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP’s national chairman, of attempting to blackmail and coerce him.

He claimed that Ayu was waging a smear campaign against him because he is one among those who wants the PDP Chairman to be ousted or resign.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the G-5 PDP Governors, led by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, have demanded Ayu’s resignation in order to support the party’s presidential nominee Atiku Abubakar.

The governor refuted rumors that he was toppling a Jemgbagh son on Sunday during a meeting with Ayu’s relatives, known as the Jemgbagh PDP Elders Forum, which included leaders from Gboko, Tarka, and Buruku Local Government Areas, or LGAs.

In spite of all the odds, Ortom, who plans to run for the Senate in 2023, claims that he helped elect Senator Ayu as national chairman.

Governor Ortom called on Dr. Ayu, who is from the same senatorial zone as him, to retire after noting that when he was running for the Benue North-West Senatorial district seat, some Jemgbagh stakeholders had started to intimidate and threaten him.

He said: “Power is given by God and no one should blackmail me because of my senatorial ambition. Nobody should think he will intimidate me because of the senate election. If God ordains me to be elected Senator for the Benue North-West Senatorial zone, no amount of blackmail or intimidation can prevent me from winning.”

PDP Crisis: Party Chieftain Reacts As Ayu Vows Not To Resign

Ortom stated that after the PDP presidential primary he advised Ayu to reach out to aggrieved leaders of the party and plead for their understanding over calls for his resignation.

“But rather than take my counsel, he chose to take the path of disuniting the party by his actions and utterances,” he said.

The Benue Governor claims that the National Chairman failed to act impartially when addressing the matters leading up to the PDP national convention, which selected Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the party’s nominee for president.

He emphasized that Ayu had vowed to step down should the party’s northern caucus at the Bauchi State lodge produce a northern presidential candidate.

The governor questioned why the PDP national chairman has already broken his voluntary promise to all of the northern party leaders.

At order for Senator Ayu and himself to be included in the meeting and give their respective viewpoints on the issue, he instructed the Jemgbagh stakeholders to do so as well.
