Former Premier League player Micky Gray criticized referee Graig Pawson for overturning Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal in Sunday’s 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Newcastle.

The unusual incident during the game resulted in the Portugal international receiving a booking after having a goal disallowed.

After stealing the ball from Magpies goalie Nick Pope in the middle of the field, Ronaldo rolled it into the goal with his left foot.

Newcastle was initially given a free kick for an earlier offside against Ronaldo, but Pawson sounded his whistle to restart play and allow Newcastle to collect the ball.

The former Juventus and Real Madrid player, though, along with his United teammates, claimed that the free kick had already been taken.

The ball was kicked to Pope by Fabian Schar before Ronaldo pinched it and scored, according to replays.

And Gray thinks Newcastle got away with one, saying on talkSPORT: “That ball is in play. Ronaldo’s sharp, he’s bright, he makes a move as soon as Nick Pope’s in contact with this ball.

“It’s a very difficult one because they [the Newcastle players] will all say they’ve not taken the free-kick.”
