It has been demanded that Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), be released right away by the Nigerian federal government.

A council of traditional leaders from the southeast and Igbo bishops issued the call on Tuesday in response to a recent appeals court decision that cleared Kanu of the accusations leveled against him.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the court found the extradition of the IPOB leader from Kenya to Nigeria to be unconstitutional and condemned the government of breaking international law in its October 13 judgement.

The chairman of the Anambra state traditional rulers council, Nnaemeka Achebe, the Methodist archbishop of Umuahia, Chibuzo Opoko, the chairman of the Enugu state traditional rulers council, L.O.C. Agubuzu, and Valerian Okeke, the Catholic archbishop of Onitsha, all signed a statement outlining the council’s position.

The statement reads; “We welcome this judgement and assert that the wisdom of the Appellate Court presents a timely and unprecedented opportunity to overcome the challenge of trust that has obstructed the path to peace; and opens the window to winning the hearts and minds of the people,” the statement reads.

“We therefore unequivocally support the call for the immediate release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in line with the unanimous judgement of the Court that his extradition and subsequent trial was illegal, and the lower court had no jurisdiction to hear the case.”

The Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), trial’s Court of Appeal decision has prompted a response from the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, responded by claiming that the court only cleared Kanu of all charges and did not find him guilty in a statement signed by his media assistant, Dr. Umar Jibrilu Gwandu.

He declared that the government will look into all of its options about the decision.
