The Nigerian federal government has declared that it has not made a final decision over the proposal to outlaw commercial motorcycles, also known as “Okadas,” throughout the nation.
The Minister of State for Transportation, Prince Ademola Adegoroye, provided the clarification while speaking in Abuja at the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle & Motorcycle Owners, Repairs & Riders Association of Nigeria’s annual strategic stakeholders’ summit (ACOMORAN).
The federal government announced in July 2022 that it is thinking about outlawing the usage of motorbikes, also known as “okadas” throughout the nation, according to anaedoonline.ng.

Abubakar Malami, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, dropped the suggestion to reporters following the National Security Council meeting (NSC).
According to his argument, an inquiry revealed that okada was employed for criminal activity across the nation, including banditry and aiding criminals in carrying out their evil schemes.
The prohibition has not yet taken effect, according to an update from Adegoroye, and no decision has been made that is final.
The Minister said; “By the grace of God, I’ve been a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the highest decision-making body in this country today and I’ve been there now since July. I was appointed June, I became member and I attended my first FEC on the 6th of July this year.
“Let me assure you and assure ACOMORAN that there is no decision to ban Okada.”

The Minister went on to say that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is currently trying to create a sustainable mass transit system for the nation.
He added that ACOMORAN, a significant stakeholder, will be consulted on how to make the plan operate sustainably even if prior administrations have attempted something similar but it has not been entirely effective.
“The Federal government under the leadership of our father and our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, is also desirous of putting in place a mass transit system that will not fail like those of the past.
“It is true that several governments in the past have done one or two things to promote mass transit and ensure that our people are able to move from one place to the other seamlessly and easily.

“But nobody is a repository of knowledge, nobody has monopoly of wisdom. ACOMORAN also have a right and a duty to this country. So, we will put heads together,” Adegoroye submitted.
