The Federal Government has been urged by stakeholders in the transportation system to provide digitalization and regulation of Okada and Keke Napep across the country.
Anthonia Ekpa, the former Federal Permanent Secretary, noted that the regulation will aid in reducing crime and insecurity among operators in the nation.
On Thursday, she made this statement at the yearly summit of strategic stakeholder.
In her keynote address, Ekpa urged the government to also provide a policy framework, adding that transport plays a significant role at the international level in promoting regional cooperation through the flow of people and goods along the import and export corridors of our neighbouring countries.
Speaking on the political economy that motorcycles offer as a commercial means of transportation, she said, “motorcycles and tricycles play a critical role in the economic boost of Nigeria, not until they were banned in some urban communities.

“As far as mass transportation is concerned, there is evidence to show that inadequacy in transportation in social services has contributed significantly to the prevalence of poverty and various parts of Nigeria,” she said.
The National President, Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners, Repairs and Riders Association of Nigeria, Samsudeen Apelegun, urged the Federal Government to implement the transport security code and order to help eliminate criminal activities, thereby making transportation seem less.
He further said the union is willing to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure that laws are adhered to, and no okada hits the road without genuine registered number plates, adding that confiscation of the Okada is not the solution.
Apelegun added that the union is ready to assist the government during this election period by voluntarily working with the Independent National Electoral Commission to ensure free and fair elections across the country.
