27 victims who were kidnapped by a group in the villages of Akawa, Gwashi, Tungar Rogo, and Anka and taken to bandit camps in the Gando/Bagega and Sunke forests in the state’s Bukkuyum and Anka Local Government Areas have been freed by the Zamfara State Police Command.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the command’s spokesperson, SP Mohammed Shehu, said the victims’ rescue followed a report to the command that a group of terrorists had invaded some villages in the local governments of Anka and Bukkuyum and kidnapped an unspecified number of people.

He said, “On receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kolo Yusuf, deployed additional police tactical operatives to reinforce DPOs of Anka/Bukkuyum and vigilantes in the rescue operation of the abducted victims.

He maintained that the outcome of the rescue operation was the unconditional rescue of 27 kidnapped victims.

He explained that 17 out of 27 rescued victims were brought to the Police Command’s Headquarters, while 10 other victims were in the hospital receiving medical attention following the trauma they passed through while in captivity.

Shehu said all the victims have been debriefed by the police detectives and the CP would formally hand them over to the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs who would on behalf of Governor Bello Matawalle reunite them with their families.
The CP commended Governor Matawalle for his support and encouragement to the police and other security agencies in their effort to rid the state of criminal activities.

The CP further congratulated the victims for regaining their freedom and assured the public that police would not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that criminal elements were apprehended and made to face the full wrath of the law.
