Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has given at least N2.1 billion to four states and outsiders in just 15 months.

Between January 2021 and October 2022, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governor made a gift.

Aminu Tambuwal, the governor of Sokoto State, received a donation of N500 million from Governor Wike on January 20, 2021, to help him reconstruct the Central Market, which was destroyed by fire.

In connection with a similar incident in Kebbi State, the governor of Rivers State gave N30 million to governor Atiku Bagudu on behalf of the victims of the state’s inferno.

In addition to the money contributed to help the disaster victims, Wike stated in his statement that his government will see to it that the damaged market was rebuilt and made operational.

When he performed the groundbreaking for the Akwa Ibom Teaching Hospital at Awa in the Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State in May 2021, Governor Wike committed the sum of N600m.

On February 14, 2022, the governor of Rivers State gave N500 million to the Bayelsa State Medical Science University in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Three months after giving N500 million, Wike gave N200 million to banditry victims who had been forced from their homes in Kaduna during his campaign for the PDP’s 2023 presidential nomination.

At a meeting hosted by the ladies in Lagos on Tuesday, the governor of Rivers State committed a sum of N300 million to support the initiatives of the spouses of Lagos State officials.

In response to Wike’s decision, the APC called the donations a waste of money and evidence of the state government’s lack of vision at a time when the state was dealing with problems in a discussion with Newsmen.

The spokesman of APC in the state, Darlington Nwauju said, “For us, as a party, we believe it is a total waste of taxpayers’ money. It also shows clearly that there is a lack of vision on the part of the government. The governor chose to make these frivolous donations to the detriment of the people of the state. We still have issues with outstanding pension arrears, and teachers of demonstration secondary schools who have not been paid for a period of five years.

“I also got a report this afternoon (Friday) that the Rivers State University has issued a notice that returning students of the institution must pay their school fees or else they will not be able to take their examinations. The donations that have been made would have defrayed to a large extent the tuition fees of these students. Currently, Rivers State students in higher institutions are not enjoying the bursary that his predecessors actually paid.”

Governor Wike’s media aide, Kelvin Ebiri, responded to the APC’s statement by calling it a ridiculous and unfounded accusation made by the last of a dying political party.

Ebiri said, “The needs of Rivers people are being met by the administration of Governor Wike, who was today conferred the ‘Distinguished Award in Infrastructure Delivery’ for his excellence in public service by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari.”
