The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, announced on Monday that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential nominee, would not receive any funding for his activities leading up to the general elections of 2023.
Wike cited the former vice president’s appointment of adversaries to his presidential campaign Council as the reason he is abandoning the PDP contender.
Wike’s initial justification, according to Anaedoonline.ng, is that Iyorchi Ayu, the party’s national chairman, must step down.
If Ayu continued to serve as the party’s chairman, Wike and four other disgruntled governors on the PDP platform decided to stop supporting Atiku.
Despite several moves to pacify Wike, the Rivers State Governor on Monday, while addressing party stakeholders and supporters in Port Harcourt during the Inauguration of the state PDP Campaign Rally, said the PDP candidate picked those he wants to work with in Rivers, adding that “if he wants us to work with him, if he wants us to campaign for him, he would have talked to us.”
Wike added: “They said they don’t want us to campaign for them; if anyone wants us to campaign for them, they will come and meet us. The presidential candidate has chosen enemies of the state as members of his campaign council; even I, the state’s governor, do not have any input.
“If anybody did not accommodate the interest of Rivers state, we will also not have their interest at heart.”
Ledogo Maeba, a former chairman of the board of the Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumola, stated Wike disbanded the board of the polytechnic because of his ties to Atiku when commenting on the alleged crackdown on Atiku’s men. He pledged to continue backing Atiku, though.
Wike pledged to combat anyone who questions his system in a public address months ago, according to Anaedoonline.ng.
“If anybody fights our system, we will fight the person back. Let me tell you what you don’t understand in politics. The moment you claim to be working with us and tomorrow, you shift to our enemy, we will use every might we have against you. We would even leave our enemy and finish you. So all of you who are going to Abuja to hold meetings with our enemies, I will finish you.
“You can’t come here, get contracts, make money, then go to Abuja to work against us and think I will leave you? I will not. I’m not a born-again to that level. I’m a Christian, but not a born-again to that level. If you touch me or any of my people, you will see the war,” Wike said during a briefing recently.
