Nigerians and visitors have been urged not to show signs of apprehension due to the prospect of a terrorist assault in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, by the Defence Headquarters (DHQ).

According to Anaedoonline.ng, this guarantee comes after the United States of America and the United Kingdom have expressed concern about the prospect of a terrorist strike in Abuja.

The US Embassy in Abuja issued a message on Sunday informing people that it will provide fewer services up until further notice and advising them to refrain from making any unneeded movements.

The message also mentioned additional potential targets for the terrorists, such as government buildings, houses of worship, schools, marketplaces, retail centers, hotels, bars, restaurants, sporting events, transportation hubs, and offices of international organizations.

Additionally, the United Kingdom urged its residents in Nigeria to exercise caution and maintain vigilance in a statement released on Sunday by its embassy in Abuja.

In order to avoid becoming a target of a terrorist attack, the British government also asked its residents to pay attention to local news and security officials’ recommendations.

The intelligence community was aware of the alert for a terrorist assault, according to Major General Jimmy Akpor, Director of Defence Information, who spoke with Newsmen.

He claimed that the military has set safeguards in place to prevent terrorists from Bok Haram or ISWAP from attacking the nation’s capital.

He said, “This is not for the press, though the UK and the US embassies have raised the alert. Before it filtered to the embassies, the intelligence community have been on top of the situation.

“The press covering it, however, would only alarm and inflame the situation. It would serve no purpose unless it would stoke fear in the minds of Abuja residents.

“So, without any violent act of terrorism, the terrorists would have yet achieved their objective, because the primary objective of terrorism is to instill fear.”
