The government of the United States has advised its people against visiting Nigeria due to rising crime, terrorism, civil upheaval, kidnapping, and marine crime.

The American government likewise issued a warning about potential terrorist strikes, stressing that they might occur with little or no prior notice.

The security situation in Nigeria also hindered America’s capacity to offer emergency aid, it was noted.

The US government warned its nationals to avoid certain states in Nigeria with a history of terrorism and kidnapping in a travel advisory and security warning released on Tuesday.

According to the statement, banditry, rape, carjacking, abduction, hostage taking, and armed robbery have all become regular criminal acts in Nigeria.

The US government specifically advised its people to stay away from Borno, Yobe, Adamawa (northern part), Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, and Zamfara states.

The list also includes the states of Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, and Rivers (with the exception of Port Harcourt).

On the US government website, the states were classified as “Level 4” dangers with an explicit “do not visit” warning.

Terrorism, kidnapping, and marine crime are some of the crimes allegedly committed frequently in the states.

Although Nigeria as a whole was given a “Level 3,” meaning that people should think twice before visiting, some specific states were given a “Level 4,” meaning that people shouldn’t go there.

America warned that “Violent crime – such as armed robbery, assault, carjacking, kidnapping, hostage taking, banditry, and rape – is common throughout the country. Kidnappings for ransom occur frequently, often targeting dual national citizens who have returned to Nigeria for a visit, as well as U.S. citizens with perceived wealth. Kidnapping gangs have also stopped victims on interstate roads.

“Terrorists continue plotting and carrying out attacks in Nigeria. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting shopping centers, malls, markets, hotels, places of worship, restaurants, bars, schools, government installations, transportation hubs, and other places where crowds gather. Terrorists are known to work with local gangs to expand their reach.
