Pa Ayo Adebanjo, the acting leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere, has renewed his support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, despite his organization’s crisis and leadership squabble.

He stated his intention to work for Obi becoming Nigeria’s next president in 2023.

There has been division among Afenifere over its support for Obi and, later, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, who is of Yoruba descent.

While the acting leader of Afenifere, Adebanjo, openly supported Obi [former governor of Anambra State in the Southeast], citing equity and fairness as the reason, the former leader of the organization, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, and some other top members of the organization endorsed Tinubu on Sunday in Akure, Ondo State capital.

The endorsement of Tinubu on Sunday at Fasoranti’s mansion in Akure created controversy, with Pa Adebanjo insisting that Obi is still Afenifere’s preferred candidate, while Fasoranti stated that the endorsement of Tinubu is for the benefit of Yoruba people.

Speaking at the official public presentation of the book titled, “Challenges of Good Governance and Leadership in Nigeria: The Peter Obi Factor,” by the Alaigbo Development Foundation (ADF) on Thursday, Pa Adebanjo reiterated that come what may, he supports any course that will make Obi the next president of Nigeria.

Pa Adebanjo went on to urge Nigerians, particularly youths, to brace themselves for a fight to ensure that Obi replaces President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

He emphasized, however, that making Obi the next president in 2023 will not be an easy task because those already in charge are unwilling to relinquish power.

“I am here to support any cause that will make Obi the next president of Nigeria. We want to change the system that celebrates and retains corruption. Young people must make themselves available on Election Day. They must mark every polling station/booth with dependable obedient followers; show them that you mean business,” he said.

According to him, Nigerians, particularly youths, who are battling to make Obi the next president should understand that they are fighting a struggle in which oppressors will do everything in their power to preserve the post in order to continue oppressing them and crushing their future.

As a result, Adebanjo urged Obi’s fans to prepare themselves and mobilize all of their support.
He advised them to conduct a big reorientation of their fans in order to avoid being seduced by politicians from other parties who are willing to purchase votes with their money.

He said, “You must show them that their money is useless. Prepare your minds not to be bought with their money. Make their money useless by your positive action. Don’t let them continue to say that you don’t have structures. You will sweep them out with their brooms. Ensure that all eligible voters go to the poll on Election Day to vote and protect their votes.”

Adebanjo described himself as an enraged elderly man who has found in Obi a young man who will calm him down for a brighter future. Thus, he stated that Nigerian youths, in particular, are not voting for Obi to be Nigeria’s president, but rather for Obi to transform their lives and their future.
