Abdurasheed Bawa, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, announced on Monday that he has appealed the FCT court’s contempt of court order against him.

It should be noted that on November 21, 2018, Justice Chizoba Oji of the FCT High Court ruled that Bawa defied a court order directing the commission to return a Range Rover and N40 million to an applicant.

The court, citing wilful defiance, ordered that Bawa be transferred to the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.

However, in response to a question from a journalist during the 2023 budget defense with the House of Representatives Committee on Anti-Corruption, Bawa stated that he has filed an appeal, arguing that the law should be allowed to take effect.

“Well, we have appealed against it, so we allow the natural course of law to take its effect”, he said.

On its budget, Bawa appealed to the committee to increase funding for EFCC to enable it fight corruption effectively.

He emphasized the need to complete its academy to properly train and retrain staff.
