The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, concluded its National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting late Monday (yesterday), with a decision not to go on strike again over the Federal Government’s payment of half salaries to members.

According to a source, the union has resolved to await the involvement of House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila in its dispute with the government over the 2009 deal.

Meanwhile, no member of the organisation has talked about the outcome, including the President, Professsor Emmanuel Osodeke, who attended the meeting at the University of Abuja campus, where ASUU’s offices are located.

However, according to a source, members have decided not to pursue the strike option in order to urge the government to address the competing issues.

According to reports, some members pushed for a total and comprehensive strike throughout all public colleges in the country, but the majority opposed the move, claiming that it was no longer popular in the current climate.

Those who opposed the strike said that it would be wrong to resume the strike, forcing students who had already returned to their respective institutions following an earlier suspension of the action to return home.

The statement issued by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, stating that the government would not pay members their full salary as planned, was claimed to have further deflated the argument of those who had advocated for a strike as a last resort.

Some members argued that because the strike was called off at the Speaker’s request following his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, it would be inappropriate to resume action while he (the Speaker) was still pushing for the federal government to reverse its decision on the no-work, no-pay policy.

A source from the meeting said, “embarking on another round of strike was not considered an option in resolving the current issues with the federal government at the meeting,” refusing to speak further.

Asked what really transpired at the meeting, he said: “You would hear the rest through the appropriate channel.

“As a body, we have people that speak for us. You will hear from them on what really happened,” he said.
