Samuel Ortom, Governor of Benue State, has issued a public apology following his viral comment that he will not support a Fulani man for President of Nigeria.

Ortom stated on Wednesday in Bauchi State that his statement may have been taken out of context.

It will be noted that Ortom stated on Sunday, while hosting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) G5 Governors in Benue State, that he would not endorse the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Ortom stated that he will not endorse Atiku because he is unconcerned about the ongoing atrocities in Benue.

While grieving the deaths of persons in his local government last week, Benue State Governor declared, “to hell with Atiku and anyone supporting him.”

He stated that everyone who supports Atiku’s presidential bid in 2023 is an enemy of Benue State.

However, when answering journalists’ queries in Bauchi on Wednesday during a visit to Governor Bala Mohammed, Ortom apologized to Nigerians for his remark.

He went on to say that he realizes how easily people can misinterpret his words, but he had no intention of inciting ethnic conflict or inflaming the political situation.

“I want to apologize to Nigerians who might have felt offended by my recent statement where I was quoted that I will not support a Fulani man becoming Nigeria’s president, I never meant it that way. I want to say that, that was not what I meant when I was captured; but all the same, I know that it would amount to a logical fallacy if people have taken it the way I did, but I want to say to those who are so offended by my remarks, I am very sorry, I didn’t mean that,” he said.
