Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, is considering changing his legal team as he battles for his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Kanu is considering changing his legal team after becoming dissatisfied with the groups vying to defend him and the organisation.

According to reports, certain parties claim to be fighting for Kanu’s and IPOB’s freedom legally.

The evolution has resulted in the establishment of numerous factions competing against one another.

According to a source close to Kanu who spoke with Vanguard on the situation on Tuesday, Kanu is concerned by the rise of entities all claiming to be pursuing IPOB’s legal interests.

There are more than three legal factions fighting for Kanu’s release from detention; nonetheless, Kanu recognizes the team led by a top lawyer and activist.

The IPOB leader recognizes the senior lawyer because of his esteemed status in the profession and the respect he commands among peers in the bar and the bench.

The senior lawyer has taken efforts that have resulted in some victories for Kanu and IPOB, but some of the lawyers who view themselves as “mainstream Biafran lawyers” are upset that they have been left out of the struggle for Kanu’s liberation.

There are rumors that some of the group’s leaders are pushing for the inclusion of two of its members who are also lawyers, but their influence is limited.

Because of their apparent popularity in the South East and within IPOB circles, members of the IPOB community in the South East want the lawyers to be at the forefront of Kanu’s legal concerns.

However, a third legal front, thought to be operating offshore, is claimed to have objected to their South East counterparts’ decision to lead the legal team.

They have asked to be permitted to oversee Kanu’s legal team because they were at the forefront of his defense before others were brought on board.

A source that spoke with Newsmen said, “What this means is that there is serious infighting among the legal teams and the leader is seriously worried to the point of accusing some of these people of working for pecuniary interest and not IPOB and he is contemplating firing some of those lawyers.”

A close source said, “Some of these people are fighting for superiority, fame and money and not that they can do the job better than what has been done while others are merely using IPOB name and Kanu to fleece people who have been donating towards his cause.”

Kanu is considering restructuring the legal team due to infighting, although it is unclear when this would happen.

There are no indications of who would be on his chosen team and who would be dropped from the legal team.

Kanu, who was ordered freed by the Appeal Court a few weeks ago, has been hauled before the Supreme Court by the Federal Government, which claims that his freedom jeopardizes national security.
