During a visit to northern England on Wednesday, King Charles III and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, narrowly avoided being struck with eggs thrown at them, according to British media footage.

The 73-year-old monarch and Camilla, 75, appeared to be targeted by three eggs that dropped near them during a walkabout in York before being escorted away by bodyguards.

A man was heard shouting “this country was built on the blood of slaves” and “not my king” before he was detained by several police officers as the incident occurred, the footage showed.

According to reporters on the scene, the protester booed the royal couple before hurling the eggs at them.

Crowds gathered at the famous Micklegate Bar venue for the visit began chanting “God save the King” and “shame on you” at the protester.

As police detained the alleged offender, Charles and Camilla continued with a traditional ritual to officially welcome the sovereign to the city of York by the lord mayor.

They were in town to see the inauguration of a statue of Charles’ mother, Queen Elizabeth II, the first since her death on September 8.
