Sen. Ali Ndume has slammed Nigeria’s government for allocating trillions of naira to public employees.

Ndume wants Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members to get 50% of National Assembly pay.

On Thursday, the Borno South legislator replied to the half-pay for academics.

The former Senate Leader highlighted that legislators usually meet twice a week and are compensated.

“Even if it means that the National Assembly will reduce sitting allowances or be paid on casual allowances basis, let it be”, NAN quoted him saying.

Ndume stated that Nigeria budgeted 20.5 trillion for 2023 but cannot give ASUU N1 trillion to address the education sector’s lingering challenges.

The politician also bemoaned the fact that students were forced to stay at home for eight months and do nothing.

“If you can spend N8.3trillion on public servants, why don’t you spend N1trillion in public universities?” He queried.
