The party has been tainted by a schism between Rivers State Governor, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, and Atiku.

To remedy the lopsidedness in the party’s leadership, the governor has demanded the resignation of the national chairman.

The governor and his allies alleged that the national chairman had committed to quit from the start of his presidency if a northern presidential contender emerged.

The emergence of Atiku prompted the governor and his supporters to put pressure on Ayu to resign as national chairman; however, Senator Ayu upheld his commitment, stating that he was elected for a four-year term.
