Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, has welcomed reports that Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his associates are open to resolving concerns with the PDP presidential candidate.
Atiku also stated his commitment to a discussion that will resolve all internal party disputes and pave the way for a much stronger and more united PDP.
According to Mazi Ibe, the former Vice President’s Media Adviser, the doors were never closed to Governor Wike and his associates during the disagreements.
The statement said, “He (Atiku) enjoins every leader of the party and their supporters irrespective of their leanings to be open-minded and support the process of resolution of the extant issues.”
The party has been tainted by a schism between Rivers State Governor, Sen. Iyorchia Ayu, and Atiku.
To remedy the lopsidedness in the party’s leadership, the governor has demanded the resignation of the national chairman.
The governor and his allies alleged that the national chairman had committed to quit from the start of his presidency if a northern presidential contender emerged.
The emergence of Atiku prompted the governor and his supporters to put pressure on Ayu to resign as national chairman; however, Senator Ayu upheld his commitment, stating that he was elected for a four-year term.
This enraged the governor and his supporters, resulting in several verbal attacks and a boycott of party activities.
The party and the presidential candidate had established reconciliation teams where consultation and conversations were taking place to resolve the internal party conflict.
