The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the time between voter registration and voting has been eliminated.
In the 2023 general elections, citizens would be able to vote instantly after being accredited at their respective polling locations, according to INEC.
According to Anaedoonline.ng, accreditation used to take place in the morning, with accredited voters returning to vote later at noon.
Most polling locations reported that some accredited voters did not return to vote, resulting in a disparity between the number of accredited voters and the total votes cast.
INEC spokesperson Festus Okoye said on TVC’s Your Views on Monday that voters would now be allowed to vote instantly after being successfully accredited using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
“We no longer do differential accreditation and voting. We do simultaneous accreditation and voting. For the 2023 elections, it is going to be simultaneous accreditation and voting. We are not going to have a differential timeframe in terms of accreditation and voting,” Okoye said.
He insisted that all voters be authenticated using the BVAS, and that the equipment would be utilized to scan the results and electronically transmit them from the polling station to the INEC portal.
