His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, says the country is in the midst of a development and governance crisis.

He blamed the difficulties on the country’s “incoherent constitutional and institutional framework.”

On Tuesday, the CAN President made this statement at the first phase of an interactive session with 2023 presidential aspirants organized by the largest Christian body in Abuja.

He explained that CAN has spent time reviewing the issues impeding peace and progress in the country and developing recommendations for how to best address them.

Okoh said, “We have consulted with Nigerians of diverse religious, ethnic and social identities on the problems of the country and the solutions to them have been articulated in the strategic document we call the Charter for Future Nigeria.

“The document considers this incoherence in political, social, and economic dimensions. It makes genuine recommendations for resolving Nigeria’s recurrent crises that borders on justice and fairness, equality of all ethnic and religious groups, equal access to basic economic and social rights, political freedom and an egalitarian and just social order.”

According to him, the aim of the debate is to ensure that all the presidential contenders understand the issues of Nigerian Christians and suggest policy and programme to address them.

Speaking at the meeting, the presidential candidate of the Action Alliance, Hamza Al-Mustapha, who listed insecurity and economic sabotage as significant teething difficulties that would confront the incoming administration, said Nigeria did not need an unreliable leader.

The second leg of the interactive session between CAN and all of the 2023 presidential candidates is scheduled to take place today (Wednesday) in the nation’s capital with the All Progressives Congress’s Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
