A total of 12 blocks of stores were destroyed by fire at Nkwo Umunze Market in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Although no one was killed, it was learned that the fire began about 6.16 a.m. on Friday from the market’s New Life Line.

The cause of the fire had not been determined as of the time of reporting this article, but eyewitnesses in the market stated the inferno damaged merchandise worth millions of naira.

Martin Agbili, the state fire chief, confirmed the occurrence but claimed the origin of the fire was yet unknown.

He said, “At about 0616hrs, Anambra State Fire Service, through the Deputy Governor, Onyeka Ibezim, received a distress call of fire outbreak at Nkwo Umunze Market, Umunze, Orumba South LGA, Anambra State.

“Immediately, we deployed our firefighters and firefighting truck to the scene of fire. The fire outbreak which emanated from New Life Line, affected about eight block shops and about four batcher shops.

“There was no lost of life and the cause of the fire outbreak is unknown as no one knew how the fire started.”

Agbili warned residents to avoid doing anything that could spark a fire during this hot season.

He praised those who controlled and fought the fire before firefighters arrived, as well as former Deputy Governor of the State Emeka Sibudu, who came to the scene to sympathize with victims and encourage firefighters.
