Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike says he has no regrets for pledging “logistics support” for the campaigns of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi in the state.

Wike made the remarks on Friday night during a banquet hosted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers for the PDP G5 governors, who are in Port Harcourt for the party’s state-level campaign launch on Saturday.

The Rivers governor made the vow to Obi on Thursday, when he dedicated the Nkpolu-Oroworokwo Flyover in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Wike, a PDP chieftain, also stated that Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, possesses all the qualities required to lead Nigeria.

Certain quarters have subsequently chastised the Rivers governor for his support for Obi over his party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

However, on Friday night, Wike said, “They said I said I’m supporting Obi, I have no regret to say: Obi is a former governor, if he is coming to Rivers State to campaign, I will give him logistics support, I will give him security.

“A former governor? Should I say I will not give him vehicles? I will not give him security? I won’t do that; I must give him logistics support.”

However, the former minister claims that the Labour Party would not win any seats in the state in the upcoming election.

Wike also challenged his counterparts in the Niger Delta zone to account for the large sums of money received as backlog for the 13% oil derivation since 1999, which President Muhammadu Buhari authorised and paid.

The governor reminded banquet participants that while he can refer to initiatives completed by his administration with Rivers funds, some of his colleagues cannot.

For months, Wike and four other PDP leaders have asked that Iyorchia Ayu resign as PDP national chairman as a condition for supporting Atiku.

While Wike and his associates have not been spotted campaigning for Atiku, it is unclear whether they will back Obi or Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the fight for Aso Rock’s top post, which experts and sharp watchers have described as a three-horse race.
