Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has promised logistical support for the presidential campaign of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Kwankwaso, within the state.

Wike made this clear on Monday, when he opened the Mgbutanwo Internal Roads in Rivers’ Emohua Local Government Area.

Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain who invited Kwankwaso to the event, hailed him as a man of integrity who cared about Nigeria.

He stated that Kano is critical to the PDP’s win in the 2023 presidential election next February, but all of his entreaties to PDP stalwarts to keep Kwankwaso did not bear fruit.

The Rivers governor claimed he talked Kwankwaso out of leaving the PDP earlier in March, but rivals within the party forced him out.

Wike said the former Kano State governor has what it takes to bring Nigeria together, but it is unfortunate that they are no longer in the same party.

He said, “You are a man of integrity. It is unfortunate we are not in the same party but God will help at the appropriate time. People like this are people that should talk about the leadership of the country. I have no apologies to make to anybody.

“I said it to Peter Obi when he came and I also want to tell you that if you are coming for campaign here, I will give you the logistics support to campaign. You are a former governor and a former minister, so why will I not accord you all the necessary support? I am not afraid to say I will give you all the logistics support.

“These are people who mean well for this country. You are preaching ethnicity, religion; you are selling yourself to Nigerians based on what you can do.”

He reminded the NNPP candidate that if he wins, he should remember Rivers people, and that the Integrity Group will continue to support whatever is right and benefit the country.

Kwankwaso was in Rivers with running partner Isaac Idahosa and NNPP chairman Buba Galadima.

Similarly, Wike committed last Thursday to provide “logistics support” for the Rivers campaigns of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi. claiming that the former Anambra State governor possesses all of the qualities required to lead Nigeria

For months, Wike and four other PDP governors known as the G5 have sought Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation as PDP national chairman as a condition for supporting the party’s presidential nominee, Atiku Abubakar.

While Wike and his associates have not been seen campaigning for Atiku, it is unclear whether they will back Kwankwaso, Obi, or Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the fight for Aso Rock’s top post, which experts and attentive watchers have described as a three-horse race.

Kano, which received over 1.8 million votes in the 2019 presidential election, has recently seen mass defections between the APC, the PDP, and the NNPP amid strong possibilities for the 2023 general elections.
