The Rivers State Government has threatened to close the Accord party secretariat in Port Harcourt, the state capital, due to an alleged change in the property’s use from residential to semi-public.

In a notice addressed to the party chairman in Rivers, the State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development ordered the party to return to the original use of the property or risk being sealed off.

The government stated in a notice signed by the State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Austin Ben-Chioma, that the alleged change of use or purpose of the property located on No 5 Ndoni Street in Port Harcourt’s GRA axis without a permit from the ministry violates Article 43 of the Land Use Regulation 2010 of the Rivers State Official Gazette No. 1 Volume 48 of 25th January, 2012 and the Executive Order 22 of 2022.

The government also stated that the building’s unilateral change of use is causing a nuisance to residents and order users in the area.

As a result, the ministry ordered the party to return to the original use of the property within seven days or risk having it sealed off.

The party has yet to react to the notice.

When contacted, a member of the Accord Campaign Council’s Media Sub-Committee in Rivers said the party had received the notice and would respond in due course.
