Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has raised concern about the condition of events in Nigeria, claiming that the country is “slipping into Abyss” under the watch of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC.

This is in response to his recommendation that Igbo political leaders who make comments detrimental to Igbo political interests undergo DNA testing to determine the validity of their Igbo lineage.

The former ECOWAS Parliamentary Leader disclosed this at a media discussion with Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State, expressing disappointment that certain self-proclaimed Igbo political elite may be spewing anti-Igbo sentiments for monetary gain.

Ohuabunwa Urges FG To Convene National Dialogue Immediately

“I’m Igbo first before becoming a politician, and it will be unjust to speak against my race just because I want to curry favour from some people.

” It’s time DNA test be conducted for all those speaking against Igbo interest to know if truly they are Igbo. How can a true Igbo man open his mouth to say Igbo can’t be President?”

While assessing President Muhammadu Buhari’s All Progressive Congress APC-led government, Ohuabunwa, the Peoples Democratic Party’s Abia North senatorial contender, stated the President “has failed badly in every department.”

Senator Ohuabunwa, who represented Abia North in the eighth Senate, stated that Buhari should have been impeached not because of incompetence but because of a weak National Assembly.

He voiced dissatisfaction with the current 9th NASS’s failure to hold the President accountable, in contrast to the eight NASS, which he described as the best Nigeria had ever had.

Ohuabunwa Tells FG To Stop Embarrassing ASUU

” I’m angry that you have a President who started by going to London for medical treatment. Not once, not twice, and for the past seven and half years he has been going to London without building a single state-of-the-art hospital in Nigeria.

” By now Buhari should have built at least six quality hospitals one in each geopolitical zone. Yet the National Assembly is looking at him and smiling.

” In 1999, PDP had over 75% of members of NASS but we began an impeachment proceeding against the then President to cut his excesses.

” But today we have a President who is performing poorly and the National Assembly has refused to call him to order. Whatever he brings they will just confirm.

” The eight Senate was the best Nigeria has ever had because when we were in the Senate we held the President accountable.

” But today, look at Nigeria slipping into Abyss to the extent that we can say there was a country but the NASS has watched helplessly”.

Senator Ohuabunwa advised Nigerians to vote for only persons of integrity and courage in the National Assembly.

According to the former Senate Committee Chairman on Primary Health and Communicable Diseases, Nigeria’s largest difficulty is weak institutions, particularly the National Assembly, that lack the fortitude to checkmate executive rascality.

He recalled being the one who opposed President Buhari’s letter to the Senate stating that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo should handle the country’s affairs while the President was on vacation.

He told the Senate that the constitution required the President to delegate power to his Vice President rather than ask him to supervise, and that the outcome of his protest led to the Senate’s decision that whenever the President is absent from the country for more than two weeks, the Vice President automatically takes over in an acting capacity.

Senator Ohuabunwa, who expressed concern that Abia North had virtually gone voiceless since his departure from the Senate in 2019, stated that his intention to return to the red chamber was to restore the zone’s dignity and provide his people with proper representation.

He regretted that several of the projects he attracted, such as the N5.2 billion Bende-Ohafia-Arochukwu road, the Federal College of Education Arochukwu, and the proposed Item federal polytechnic, all of which had passed third reading in the Senate, had not been followed through on by his successor.

Ohuabunwa complained that, instead of fighting the cause of Abia North, his successor had been busy promoting the All Progressive Congress’ Muslim-Muslim ticket and “Ruga.”

He said that his successor should have been recalled due to ineptitude and poor representation.

Senator Ohuabunwa bemoaned the lingering insecurity in Abia North in particular, as well as the docility of the people’s representatives in the national assembly, whom he regretted for lacking the courage to even raise a motion on the floor of the national assembly.
