The security situation in Enugu State’s Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area appears to be deteriorating, as gunmen have declared a 10-day sit-at-home to mourn in the entire council area.

According to Anaedoonline.ng, the sit-in was held to remember colleagues slain by security officers in the council region.

The gunmen issued a warning to all residents of the area to refrain from traveling to a popular market, “Eke Ozzi,” at Ogrute, the council area’s headquarters, or face the wrath of the notorious group that has been spreading havoc in the council area.

The hoodlums were alleged to have begun confiscating motorcycles with Nigerian license plates and to have warned school officials in the council area to demolish all Nigerian flags flying at all secondary and primary schools in the local government.

They also ordered schools that use “green and white” uniforms to change to other colors or face the wrath of the infamous gang.

According to a citizen of the local government region who requested anonymity, persons are killed virtually every day in the council area.

He stated that the current sit-at-home order followed a renewed onslaught on their members by Ebubeagu and Nigerian soldiers, which resulted in the burning of some of their leaders’ residential properties in Imufu, Umuagama, and Aguibeje communities in the local government area.

Another resident of the region, who also requested anonymity, stated, “The trouble began when some politicians in the council area divided a group of thugs that they had been using during local government elections and trained some of them as Ebubeagu militias.”

“The splinter group are now in a supremacy or cult war with the trained Ebubeagu militias in the local government area and that is why there is chaos and insecurity in Igbo-Eze North now.”

“Those fighting are neither members of the Indigenous People of Biafra nor Eastern Security Network,” the source explained.

Women dressed in black demonstrated in the local government area on Friday, alarmed by the rising insecurity, but some were arrested and others were dispersed with teargas by the police.

According to reports, the women said “We are unhappy because there is no peace in our towns, state, or county. We urge our politicians to put an end to the murders of our children and other loved ones.”
