The Federal Executive Council has established a new National Language Policy that makes various mother tongues mandatory mediums of instruction from primary one to primary six.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, told State House correspondents that the policy is effective immediately.

He noted that the government recognizes that implementation will be tough, but that it is critical to foster the cultivation and use of all Nigerian languages.

As a result, he revealed that the mother tongue will be used exclusively for the first six years of education, before being combined with the English language beginning in Junior Secondary School.

Even though the policy is now formally in place, Adamu believes it will not be completely implemented until the government provides instructional materials and trained teachers are available.

He went on to say that the mother tongue utilized in each school will be the prevalent language spoken by the community in which it is located.

On Wednesday, President Muhammadu Buhari presided over the Federal Executive Council Meeting.
