Ikpeazu Signs Legislation Legalising Female Inheritance

The Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has signed the female inheritance bill into law.

Following its passage in the Abia State House of Assembly, the inheritance bill will see Abia women inherit and own properties in their father’s family.

The citation for the law is ‘The Female Persons Right of Inheritance of Property Law 2022’.

While congratulating Abia women on the feat, Ikpeazu said his administration would continue to support women.
The governor added that his administration would lean on the side of reason and common sense in the discharge of its obligations to residents, noting that women would no longer be treated as second-class citizens even in their families.

Ikpeazu hailed the state assembly for the courage to pass the bill adding that the female inheritance bill is the most important legislation passed by the state house.

He further described the bill as historic, positively disruptive and capable of setting the society on a path of equal opportunities and sustainable development.
