On their approach to their hostels from the Stephen Keshi stadium, some athletes representing Kaduna State at the ongoing 21st National Sports Festival in Asaba were attacked.

Our correspondent learned from a Kaduna athlete who spoke on the condition of anonymity that this occurred on Tuesday morning at 3 a.m. in the Itsele-uku neighbourhood near the hostel.

The athletes did not leave the stadium until after 1 a.m. that morning because the bus that was supposed to transport them to their lodgings was late. This adds to other athletes’ complaints about the transportation given during the Delta 2022 festival.

The bus conveying the athletes to their accommodations from the stadium was shot by the attackers but they escaped with no casualties as the attackers fled when they discovered the presence of security officers with the athletes.

The issue of the distance of the hostels from the stadium had been raised by the athletes who were camped at the Old NYSC camp in Itsele-uku with some athletes like the Taekwondo athletes from Lagos booking hotels for themselves.
