In order to participate in the upcoming general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restated its prohibition on using smartphones in voting booths.

This was said on Monday during the INEC Stakeholders Summit on Addressing the Influence of Money on the 2023 General Elections in Abuja by INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Representatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, media organizations, civil society organizations, and the Inter-Party Advisory Committee were present (IPAC).

“Citizens must reject inducements to sway their votes through vote-buying. They must also engage effectively in stopping the negative use of money in our electoral process generally by reporting cases to INEC and other agencies. In addition, CSOs should make this a major plank of both their pre-election and election observation activities,” Yakubu said.

According to the INEC chairman, financial institutions, religious organizations, traditional institutions, the media, civic entities, and most importantly, citizens, are key players in the fight against vote-buying.

“Let me seize this opportunity to remind the public that the ban on cellphones at voting cubicles is still in force. We have for some time now reorganised our polling units so that ballot boxes are placed next to the voting cubicles to forestall the practice by unscrupulous voters showing their marked ballot papers to vote-buyers.

“We appeal to voters to draw the attention of our polling officials whenever they observe that these basic rules are not complied with. Let me once again reassure Nigerians that we are determined to ensure a solid election management system and a legacy of credible elections in Nigeria. We believe that every conscientious Nigerian wants us to do so,” he said.

Yakubu gave the populace the assurance that INEC will keep developing strategies to thwart the threat of vote-buying and added that the commission’s commitment would always be to the people.
He claimed that INEC had implemented cutting-edge technology to guarantee a legitimate process for the general elections in 2023.

Yabagi Sani, the chairman of IPAC, voiced alarm over the acts of some political figures who, in his opinion, are determined to undermine the electoral rules by participating in unethical behavior.

Bala Ciroma, the police’s Assistant Inspector General for Operations, claimed that the police had made numerous arrests of people engaged in vote-buying. He disclosed that several thugs had also been arrested and are facing trial in courts of competent jurisdiction.

He claims that the police will send out more operatives to make sure that politicians who campaign while carrying large sums of cash to influence people’ opinions are apprehended.

Broadcast stations were given the “riot act” by NBC Director General Balarabe Ilelah, who warned them not to support political causes that divide people. A broadcast station would be punished if it is discovered that it participated in actions that put the nation’s peace in danger. He also ordered all broadcast stations to preserve records of their transactions during the election season.
