The Labour Party (LP) has labeled Doyin Okupe’s money laundering conviction as a “syndicated campaign” meant to discredit Peter Obi, who is the party’s nominee for president in 2023.

“If you are going to do this, do this on all candidates who have cases in court,” LP’s spokesman Tanko Yunusa said on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Tuesday.

On Monday, Okupe was found guilty of violating the Money Laundering Act by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja for receiving more than N200 million in cash from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.

In counts 34, 35, 36, and 59, the court found Okupe guilty, and he was given a sentence of two years in jail with the possibility of a fine.

Before the two joined the LP this year, Okupe was an associate of Obi’s from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Okupe later paid a N13 million fine and avoided going to jail.

Later, Okupe, a former advisor to Goodluck Jonathan, stepped down from his position as director-general of Obi’s campaigns.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) would not be deterred or dissuaded by Okupe’s conviction, according to Yunusa, who also said that Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients,” will be even more determined to overthrow the APC on February 25, 2023.

According to the LP spokesman, Dasuki, who was alleged to have handed the money to Okupe, was freed by the courts.

“Those who were said to have given the money are living free and those who have been involved in drugs, corruption, at the highest level have not been touched.

“That made us to start thinking that this particular decision or the judgement of the court is another judgemental pick-and-choose one because those who are supposed to have been convicted are not convicted,” he said.
