2023: British High Commissioner Visits PDP NWC, Sues For Peace

Catriona Laing, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, is meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party’s National Working Committee (PDP).

Liang is appealing for peaceful elections at the meeting, pledging that the British government will sanction any individual or group that incites electoral violence.

The British government has consistently stated its commitment to free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria ahead of the 2023 general election.

It has repeatedly threatened Nigerian political actors with visa sanctions if they participate in sponsoring election violence through its Nigerian High Commission.

With the elections quickly approaching, several groups have issued similar pleas for peace before, during, and after the general election in 2023.

Just as the presidential campaign for 2023 formally began in September, the National Peace Committee, led by former Military Head of State Abdusalami Abubakar, persuaded the presidential candidates to sign a peace treaty in Abuja.

At the signing of the agreement, the Peace Committee urged the 18 political parties, their presidential candidates, and spokespersons to commit to issue-based campaigns, since fake news and misinformation are already endangering the peaceful conduct of the 2023 general elections.
