Joao Felix, a forward for Atletico Madrid, has been loaned to Chelsea for the remainder of the current campaign, the Premier League team confirmed on Wednesday.

The 23-year-old will increase manager Graham Potter’s attacking options for his team, which is currently struggling with injuries and occupying the 10th slot in the standings.

Chelsea tweeted “the artist has arrived”, welcoming the Portugal international, who had also been linked with Arsenal and Manchester United.

“Chelsea is one of the great teams in the world and I hope to help the team reach their objectives, so I am very, very happy to be here and very excited to play at Stamford Bridge,” Felix said in a club statement.

Felix made one of the most expensive signings in history when he moved from Benfica to Atletico in 2019 for 126 million euros ($135 million). In 131 appearances for the team, Felix has scored 34 goals.

He scored in Portugal’s 3-2 group-stage win over Ghana, and he also played a role in Portugal’s passage to the World Cup quarterfinals in Qatar last month.

On Wednesday, Atletico announced that Felix has extended his agreement with them for a another year, or until June 2027.

“From Atletico Madrid we wish Joao Felix every success in this new professional stage,” the Spanish club said in a statement.

After a challenging season, Chelsea is currently 10 points outside of the top four in the Premier League and eliminated from both domestic cup tournaments.
