The self-described disciple of the IPOB leader who is now in detention, Simon Ekpa, has announced yet another lockdown in the South-East states to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Ekpa became well-known in July 2021 after it was revealed that he will be Radio Biafra’s chief broadcaster.

But soon after his hiring, IPOB declared that he was quitting because he had refused to agree to the terms of engagement for running the radio station.

However, despite being the leader of the “Autopilots” section of the IPOB, the Nigerian resident of Finland has frequently sworn allegiance to Kanu and support for the Biafra struggle.

In a tweet on Monday, Ekpa said the entire land of “Biafra will be locked down on 23rd and 24th of January 2023 in protest” against the detention of the IPOB leader.

He tweeted, “Based on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s current health condition, the Court of Appeal judgment discharging him, Umuahia court judgement and Gov Soludo’s recent call for his release, we are giving the FGN between now and 22nd of January 2023 to release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“Failure to do that, the entire land of Biafra will be locked down on 23rd and 24th of January 2023 in protest.”

Thousands of Nigerians demanded Ekpa’s arrest in December 2022, according to Newsmen, after his five-day sit-at-home order resulted in the deaths of several Southeast area citizens.

The petitioners demanded that Ekpa, the person responsible for the order, be detained by the governments of Finland, Nigeria, and the European Union.

Since June 2021, when Kanu was re-arrested in Kenya and sent back to Nigeria by the Nigerian government for ongoing trial on treasonable felony and terrorist accusations brought against him by the government, he has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).

A three-judge Court of Appeal bench unanimously decided on October 13, 2022, that Kanu’s extradition from Kenya was unlawful.

The court also ordered Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release from custody after clearing him of all charges.

Additionally, in its report released on July 20, 2022, the UN Human Rights Council Working Group referred to the extraordinary extradition of the IPOB leader from Kenya in June 2021 as “illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional extradition.”
