Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly is personally spearheading the club’s last-ditch attempt to recruit Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez, fearing rival clubs may make summer moves for the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner.

Chelsea were said to have rekindled their interest in Fernandez and were planning a new offer to make to Benfica on Sunday.

The Blues, who have spent over £400 million on new players since Boehly took over at the west London club, were heavily connected with a bid for the midfielder early in the transfer season, but talks fell through.

Benfica were clear that Fernandez would not be sold, and their position has not changed despite Chelsea’s willingness to spend roughly 120 million euros and even include a player in the deal.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are unfazed by Benfica’s attitude and are willing to “go big” and pay “crazy money” to get the 22-year-old to England, according to Fabrizio Romano.

According to reports, Boehly is deeply invested in the deal and wants to be involved in the negotiations since he believes Chelsea would face greater competition for the Argentina international if they wait until the summer.
