From next month, the United Kingdom’s Department for Education has changed the priority subjects for nationals considering migration to the country through its Teaching Regulation Agency.

According to the UK DfE’s amended document, the portal for the program, which is scheduled to launch on February 1, 2023, would be open only to instructors who are professionals in specific areas.

The document, which specifies the eligibility criteria for non-UK citizens interested in obtaining the Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) that will allow them to find teaching employment across the country, will prioritize particular courses that are in high demand in the UK.

According to the documents, teachers from some countries can easily apply for QTS under existing European Union (EU) and home legislation, but others cannot, even though they have equal skills and experience.

According to the report, the new legislation will make this process more consistent and fair, as well as “promote the flow of well-qualified teachers to the English workforce.”

The UK on its website, said, “A new professional recognition service, called ‘apply for qualified teacher status in England’, will set consistent standards so the qualifications and experience of overseas teachers can be fairly assessed.

“It will eventually be open to qualified teachers from all countries outside the UK.
