Pastor Forges Obituary To Escape N3m Debt Repayment

Paul Oyewole, a pastor in Ondo State, is accused of creating and posting his own obituary on the social media app WhatsApp in order to escape repaying a $3 million debt owing to a church member.

The 43-year-old pastor was prosecuted on Wednesday at the Chief Magistrate Court in Ondo Town, Ondo, on allegations of fraudulently acquiring 3m from one Boyede Emmanuel with the promise to repay the money within seven days, which he failed to do.

The defendant illegally announced his obituary on WhatsApp after sending a phoney bank alert, according to Police Prosecutor Akao Moremi.

He was also said to have “threatened the complainant on phone, with the intent to intimidate him and also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace, by stripping himself naked in front of the house of the complainant.”

Oyewole has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was granted N1 million bail with two sureties in like sum.
