Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Governor of Abia State, has disclosed that everything humanly possible was done to preserve Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Prof Eleazar Uche Ikonne.

However, he grieved that all of his efforts to free Ikonne from the grasp of death had failed, and it was clear that it was his turn to answer the final call.

The professor of optometry and former Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) died on January 25, 2023, after suffering repeated heart arrests.

Governor Ikpeazu conveyed his condolences yesterday during a visit to the family of the man he had appointed as his successor. The governor and his entourage were greeted by the deceased’s widow, Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne, the Solicitor General of Abia State, and his first son, Dr. Chike Uche-Ikonne.

Prof Ikonne’s death, according to Ikpeazu, was “shattering, tremendous, and irreparable,” but no one can challenge the Almighty God over any occurrence.

In explaining his choice of Prof Ikonne as his successor, the Abia governor stated that his passion, vision, and hope for a greater Abia led him to Prof Ikonne as a worthy successor beginning May 29, 2023.

He praised the late governorship candidate for his forthrightness, courage, record of service, experience, and dedication to Abia State, adding that he was a good, bold, and courageous man who died as a believer in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

While expressing hope that his departed political ally would live a glorious life in the afterlife, Ikpeazu advised Ikonne’s wife, his first son, the entire Ikonne family, and others impacted by the death to bear the loss with fortitude.

Dr Chike Ikonne, speaking on behalf of the family, thanked the Abia governor for empathizing with them during their time of bereavement and for his role in the battle to save their father. He claimed that they had accepted the sad tragedy as God’s will.
